I Am Truth – A Poem

Jesus said to Thomas, and other hearers, nearby:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6 (NRSV)
Ever about and always extending,
I am Truth, and I’m always contending,
For my rightful place in this crooked world,
And to be in your heart, cherished and unfurled.
Slow to get up and ensure life’s release,
I am the only one, who’s in consummate Peace,
For I am Righteousness, also, one and the same,
We both appear ready always, in God’s name.
Though I delay, I can assure you I come,
About as assuredly as I make you numb,
For I am the one morbidly unfair,
Yes, I am Truth, and sometimes I scare.
But a thorough commitment is certainly wise,
As I’ll not come in any deceptive disguise,
You can rely on me to be eventually just,
I am Truth and go with me you must.
When you do you’ll find blessings to be,
Just like it is when finally you are free,
Because I am a test of faith—steadfast and true,
Don’t fob me off, really, or then you’ll rue!
I am all God’s and I am eternally manifest,
Only in me is there veracity within rest,
So put down your weapons, all of your lies,
I am Truth; you’ve got no reason to despise.
The secret to me and my access is plain,
Seek God holy and you will not disdain,
Go with me and I cause you to understand,
I am Truth and I’ll hold you by the hand.
I want you to know we are to be best friends,
On me and over me, love extends,
For love needs me as much as I need it,
Because, as it is, truth must fit!
When truth does fit our every varying mood,
We have access to an abundance of God’s spiritual food,
Then everything is set and all is prepared,
All because God is the only one who’s cared.
To be committed to God is life’s best decision,
All because the Lord is our Divine Physician,
Through God’s truth we come to the aware,
Of our need for healing—the Lord’s consummate care.

We are commanded to worship in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Everything within the spiritual life rests on truth. All our growth depends on it. When we are open to truth we are open to love. The greatest decision beyond committing ourselves to God is committing ourselves to truth, for within truth is life.
